Controls Window
The Controls Window
The Controls Window allows you to control software and hardware
outside of the learning environment. This window allows you to switch
disks (if others are available)and to connect to the internet related
CD material and to obtain automatic software updates.
The control window has 3 button selections, Preference, Search and
Help:
Preferences
The Preference Button allows you to change certain
features of the Classroom Companion ? CD-ROM
The Hint Bar: When you put your mouse over an item of the
screen,the hint bar will display text that describes what that item
does.
Title of CD in drive: This field shows which Classroom Companion
? CD is in your CD-ROM drive.If more that one CD came with your
course guide,you can switch to a different CD by clicking the Eject
button.
Online Status: Displays whether or not your computer is connected
to the internet.If you computer is currently connected to the
internet,the online status display will say "connected ".If you are
not currently online the status display will say "not connected".You
can update your online status by clicking on the Connect button.
Important: The term "online " means being connected to the
internet..To connect to the internet,you must "sign on" through an
internet service provider,,such as America Online.You can also
connect your computer to the internet with a direct connection via
Ethernet or DSL.Web browsers such as Netscape or Internet Explorer
are programs that view web pages once an internet connection has been
established.
Upgrade Information: This field displays any information about
updates that are available for the Classroom Companion?
CD-ROM.To download and install an update,simply click on the Update
button.
Speech
Audio Hints: If this option is selected,audio will inform the
student as to what button selection they are about to make.
Voice: This option lets the student choose what type of voice will
read the audio hints.
Text Display
Font Size: You can adjust the font size of the text in the
application by using the font control buttons.To increase the font
select the up arrow,to decrease the font select the down arrow.
Language: This option allows the student to change the language of
the disk contents.
Captioning: You can select whether you want captioning turned on
or off for the Classroom Companion? CD-ROM.
The Americans with Disabilities Act,known as the ADA,was a
monumental piece of legislation,covering everything from wheelchair
ramps to Braille labeling.Of the estimated 44,000,000 people directly
affected by the ADA,over half of them are affected due to hearing
problems.Captions provide access to audio media for people who are
Deaf or hard of hearing,by rendering the audio of the program as
text.Captions differ from foreign language subtitles in that they are
colored and positioned to indicate who is speaking,and provide
information on music and sound effects which may be crucial to the
understanding of the program.Subtitles are merely a translation of a
foreign language into English.
Search
You can use the Classroom Companion ?CD-ROM
search window to search for a desired topic or phrase.To perform a
search,type the search topic into the "Keyword " query box..Then
choose the categories you want to search by clicking the box next to
the appropriate item (library,presentations,etc).When that is
completed,click the search button to begin looking for your desired
information.The program application will then search the categories
you selected for the keyword you entered in the query box.If you
select "internet " the application will display the results of your
search in your web browser.
Help
The help button provides information and answers to
questions students have about the Classroom Companion ?
CD-ROM.When you click on the button,you will see the help menu.Click
the topic in the help menu that you would like to know more
about.Help topics labeled with a CD icon will open in the controls
window.
Help topics labeled with a Faulkner Press text document icon will
open an online tutorial in your computers web browser.
The online tutorials are provided to give you some familiarity
with the application without having to read a lengthy instruction
manual.These interactive guides will take you through the intricate
workings of the CD-ROM.
